Khara Breeden is a registered nurse with a BSN from Regis University, a Master’s degree in Patient Safety Leadership from the University of Illinois at Chicago and a Doctorate of Nursing Practice from Duquesne University. She holds her SANE-A and SANE-P certifications, as well as the AFN-BC by the ANCC.
Khara has been a nurse for 16 years in a variety of setting including Labor and Delivery, the Emergency Department, PACU, and within the specialty of Forensic Nursing. Khara began her career in Forensic Nursing at Harris Health as a Forensic Nurse Examiner in 2011 and immersed herself within the field. In 2015, she became the Program Manager of Forensic Nursing Services at Harris Health and was responsible for the day to day management of the department. After completion of her doctorate, she transitioned into academia and is currently working as faculty member at Houston Baptist University and teaches Care of the Childbearing Family.
Khara continues to be involved in Forensic Nursing and has served as the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) Board Secretary, and is the Board liaison of the Suspect Exam and Title IX task forces and has previously been the liaison for the Strangulation Task Force until completion of the Task Forces publication of the IAFN Non-Fatal Strangulation Documentation Toolkit where she is listed as an author. She is also the IAFN Texas Chapter’s President and serves on their Education Committee.
While collaborating with community partners, the gap in medical services for victims of violence in Harris and surronging counties was strongly highlighted. Khara set forth to develop a collaborative approach to solving this issue and created Harris County Forensic Nurse Examiners (HCFNE), where she serves as the Chief Executive Officer.
